Position Overview

This position supervises the academic advising team, develops, and directs advising policy and procedure, and serves on a variety of School and University committees.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree and four years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory. Strong leadership skills appropriate for a supportive, dynamic environment.
  • Strong presentation skills, critical thinking skills, creative problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Job Duties:

  • Develops strategies for things like improving processes and increasing enrollment.
  • Liaison with faculty, staff and other units. Gives presentations and trains other advisors on effective presentation skills. This includes the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population both verbally and in writing.
  • Understands university policy and procedure, as well as state requirements pertaining to higher education, financial air, and transfer coursework articulation as related to functional area.
  • Identifies problems, analyzes causes, takes or recommends actions with excellent follow up.
  • Oversees training and development of staff, assigning workloads. Develops and maintains effective working relationships across campus.
  • Researches and creates reports and surveys to upper management to assist with program implementation and growth.
  • Works with budget officer and Dean to develop budget to support undergraduate retention efforts.
  • Coordinates advising services and oversees daily operations for advising services for the Mayborn School of Journalism.
  • Represents the Mayborn on Campus Committees as applicable to functional area and chooses appropriate action on behalf of the Mayborn School of Journalism where appropriate.
  • Oversees and implements the design of new processes, advising guides, support documentation, advising processes and advising related curriculum.
