Sparkling Blueberry Ginger Mocktail (2)

What is a Mocktail?

The word mocktail = mock + co*cktail! It’s a non-alcoholic alternative to a traditional co*cktail that says bye-bye to the booze but keeps all the goodness of fruit, herbs, syrups, and other tasty co*cktail ingredients. It’s a great way to enjoy a refreshing drink that’s still full of fun, just free of alcohol.

How to Make a Sparkling Blueberry Mocktail

This vibrant purple drink starts with an herby, fruity, naturally sweetened simple syrup made by simmering fresh or frozen blueberries with fresh ginger, rosemary, and water.

Sparkling Blueberry Ginger Mocktail (3)

Then we strain the mixture and add maple syrup and lemon juice for a sweet, bright, and balanced result.

Sparkling Blueberry Ginger Mocktail (4)

And then it’s mock o’clock! Once the syrup is done, simply combine it with ice cubes and a generous splash of sparkling water. Ya, she’s gorgeous!

Ingredients

BLUEBERRY SYRUP

  • 2 cups water
  • 3/4 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • 2 Tbsp roughly chopped fresh rosemary, woody stems removed
  • 3 Tbsp finely chopped fresh ginger
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice

SPARKLING MOCKTAIL

  • Ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup blueberry syrup (plus more to taste)
  • 1/2 cup sparkling water*
  • Few dashes of orange bitters (optional // elevates and rounds the flavors!)

Instructions

  • BLUEBERRY SYRUP: In a small saucepan, combine the water, blueberries, rosemary, and ginger. Bring to boil, then cover and simmer for 20 minutes, until the blueberries have lost most of their color and the mixture is dark and fragrant.

  • Strain the blueberry mixture into a measuring cup or jar and add the maple syrup and lemon juice. Stir to combine and set aside to cool slightly.

  • SPARKLING MOCKTAIL: When you’re ready to serve, add ice to your drinking glasses and top with 1/4 cup blueberry syrup. Top each with ~1/2 cup sparkling water, plus more blueberry syrup for sweetness or sparkling water to taste. A few optional dashes of orange bitters really elevate and round out the flavors. Stir to combine, and enjoy!

  • Any leftover syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or frozen in an ice cube tray then transferred to a sealed container for up to 1 month.

Hello, thank you for this recipe.

Can the sparking water be added to the mixture a few hours before consumption? Does this affect quality or taste?

I am going to a large gathering. Could this be mixed up and served from a pitcher? I don’t want to have to explain how to make it or spend the evening making individual drinks. 😊

Hi Jennifer, you could probably add the sparkling water to the pitcher when you get there. It might not be quite as bubbly especially as it sits, but should otherwise work!

This was fantastic. I doubled the recipe, and had to make more already (in less than a week).
A massive hit at our dinner parties.
I have a love heart shaped ice cube tray, and frozen half the mixture. Added a few syrup ice cubes, regular ice cubes, some mixture and some soda and a slice of orange. Everyone loved it.

This was great & I can’t wait to make it again! My friends loved it & asked for the recipe. One modification I recommend was a mix of ginger beer & sparking water instead of just sparkling water. Adds a nice gingery bite. Also used a bit more syrup per drink than suggested. Thanks for the fantastic recipe!

This is an easy and delicious mocktail. I want to thank you for this recipe because I committed to a dry January this year, and I made it! This mocktail hit the spot and was the perfect happy hour treat as I prepared dinner during this month (mostly MB recipes as well!). I kept the syrup stocked in my fridge all month long! I made the recipe as is except I substituted one tsp coconut sugar for the maple syrup. (I was also looking to reduce sugar this month, and I think it still tastes great with little sweetness). Thanks again! I’ll be drinking this the rest of the year too.

Wouldn’t a syrup be at least a bit concentrated? When the mixture finished simmering it was still the same thickness as when it started and honestly I didn’t find it very flavorful. I used organic blueberries I had picked myself last summer which were delicious berries. I ended up adding more berries and cooking it longer to thicken /concentrate it a bit. Tasty, but next time I’ll Katrina t with double (at least) the ingredients. I look forward to experimenting with using it and some non-alcoholic spirits I have to make some fancy non-alcoholic drinks

Hi Katrina, thanks for the feedback! The mixture doesn’t thicken like a syrup, but we can see how that might be confusing. Cooking longer and adding more berries would be delicious!

This drink is amazing. First mocktail I’ve ever made. Well unless you count mixing limeade and seltzer water with a lime garnish. I’m doing dry January and February and to keep things fresh and interesting, I’m doing mocktails. This is a winner. Let’s see what else you got!!

I am on the thought wave of thinking of recipes more of guidelines kind of “cook” and not that I measured the ingredients in your recipe I did follow along. Then mixed it with an Italian mandarin orange sparkling water. ..since I didn’t have orange bitters.. –do you have a recipe for orange bitters?

Loved this! I toted a jar around to a few NYE get togethers to share, and it was a hit with both sparkling water and sparkling wine. I found the ginger overpowered the blueberry a bit but it was still lovely and a beautiful color.

Mmm, great blend of ingreds! I really enjoyed this drink upon celebrating New Year’s, thank you! I used around double the syrup with about half the ratio of sparkling water in my drink to make it the balance of sweet and tart that I wanted. I also found that a splash of alcohol-free gin along with the syrup and a little of the sparkling water worked nicely as well 😍
